Feb 6: E is for Enya

An alphabet of bands and artists as a series for the next 26 days. These were selected by the Spotify algorithm.

"The sea has been in my heart since I was a little girl. I grew up in Gaoth Dobhair, an Irish-speaking parish on the Atlantic coast of County Donegal, in the northwest corner of Ireland. The area is known for its rugged cliffs and windswept beaches, and the sea’s moods and spirit still find their way into my music."

I'm really not sure why Enya appeared on top, as I haven't played much of her music at all. But perhaps I haven't played much music by bands beginning with 'E'....

She definitely has a song which is packed with geography, whose lyrics are essentially a list of place names. It's called 'Orinoco Flow' and was released back in 1988. This album was huge at the time...

Some of the places mentioned in the lyrics - someone's probably produced a StoryMap of them...
From Bissau to Palau, in the shade of Avalon
From Fiji to Tyree and the Isles of Ebony
From Peru to Cebu, hear the power of Babylon
From Bali to Cali, far beneath the Coral Sea

There's a Reddit map post at least...

Enya was born in County Donegal in Ireland and her family owned a pub in Gweedore. She is related to the members of Clannad, who were my 'C' choice on the algorithm.
She is apparently the 2nd biggest selling Irish artist after U2.

What 'E' band comes up on your algorithm?
Let me know in the comments... along with any memories of Enya and her music...
