An alphabet of bands and artists as a series for February. These were selected by the Spotify algorithm.
Bob Mould is still as powerful as ever after over forty years in the business and is one of my favourite musical performers.
I started my exploration with his album 'Workbook' when it first came out, and this was a find via 'Q' magazine - which will have its own post in due course. This was a departure from the previous music he made with a band called Hüsker Du.
Bob's music is guitar driven, often with short songs and punchy bass and drums. Many of the songs are less than 3 minutes long.
Here's a great track from the album 'Body of Song' as a taster.
Bob has had a remarkable career including time spent with WCW scripting wrestling bouts. He has also collaborated on electronic albums including 'Blowoff' with Richard Morel.
I have all his albums.. and they are played regularly.
They regularly appear on my Spotify Wrapped as being amongst the most listened-to tracks of the year.
In May 2025, Bob released his latest album 'Here we go Crazy', which features the usual mix of short snappy songs. There will be others added to the blog as the year progresses. His 'American Crisis' protest song has already been added.
Bob Mould is also a superb live act, whether solo or with his usual pair of band mates.
I recommend checking out some of his music from throughout his career. It is mostly available on Streaming services.
During this time, Spin Magazine revealed Mould was gay against his will. After disbanding Sugar, he released two more solo albums in the late 90s before taking a short break from music as a scriptwriter for WCW Wrestling.
Sugar's best album is Copper Blue and here's the track 'Hoover Dam'
Mould’s return to music in the early 2000s began with the electronica-rock-influenced Modulate, described as “a rock record with electronic effects”, followed by an electronic dance release under the name Loudbomb. Both would be his first two solo releases to not chart on the Billboard Albums Chart. During this time, Mould began a monthly gay dance event called Blowoff with DJ Richard Morel that would last 11 years, and released a dance album too. I have this as well.

In October 2025, there was a cryptic announcement that Sugar were reforming and new music was released and details of some gigs in London, and then a tour.
I have a ticket for Sugar later this year.
And a final Bob track to finish: 'Losing Time' - played live...
